You’re sitting on the couch watching a mindless show when the feeling hits you. It’s subtle, but slowly a craving creeps up your spine. A craving for a movie that satisfies your curiosity and fire for the world. Yup, you’re stoned. And you want trippy. You want funny. But most of all, you want a movie that you haven’t seen before. With the cold weather coming in, it’s a great time to give that ol’ stoned movie list a revision.
The internet is riddled with overused suggestions for stoner flicks, like Donnie Darko, Friday, Inception, all of which skip the fact that these were major Hollywood hits. Stoners need more selection and films to watch they haven’t seen already.
So with that in mind, here are five less known movies to watch while you’re stoned.
Enter the Void (2009)
We start with arguably the most psychedelic and experiential of the selections. Directed by Gasper Noe, Enter the Void, follows the spirit of a drug dealer contemplating his existence. A great choice for those looking to sit-back and journey into the mind of a filmmaker. The flick is jam-packed with incredible colors and visuals compounded by the fact the Noe wrote the film while on mushrooms. Maybe that explains why the movie is notoriously hard to understand…
Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982)
Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a raunchy teen comedy that chronicles the adventures of a group of fantastic characters. Sex, nudity, drug use, you name it. This movie will allow you to relive the life of a mischievous 80s high school student. Not to mention, this movie offers arguably the most iconic stoner quote of all time (see above).
I Don’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore (2017)
The newest film on the list is a little different from the other selections but no less entertaining. Vigilante justice meets quirky and dark comedy featuring Elijah wood and Jane Levy. There’s just something about the Netflix Original that pulls on all the right strings when you’re lifted. Plus Frodo (Elijah Wood) as a self-proclaimed badass with nunchucks and ninja stars? Yes. All day yes.
Super Troopers (2001)
Yes. These shnozberries definitely taste like shnozberries. If you have no idea what I am talking about, perfect, stop reading right now and go watch Super Troopers. You can thank me later. If you do know what I’m talking about, it’s because this is likely the most known flick on the list. A wild comedy following a group of highway patrol officers in the U.S. is a clear favorite amongst the community.
Grandma’s Boy (2006)
A forgotten classic. A diamond in the rough. True stoner comedy makes it’s stand in this list with Grandma’s Boy. The story of a pot-smoking video game designer living in his Grandma’s house. GB is constantly a film that flies under the radar for reliable stoner comedy and certainly deserves more respect. Next time before watching Harold and Kumar for the 100th time, give the pot-smoking chimpanzee in this movie a chance.
