Canadians have reached a higher level of innovation with cannabis-based beer.
Province Brands, a Toronto-based company, has recently filed a technology patent for a special beverage which allows people to have the best of the two worlds: cannabis and alcohol.
Beer is traditionally made from four basic ingredients: barley, water, hops, and yeast. But for the first time in the world, this new beer is brewed entirely with cannabis and not barley. It is also a far cry from the common marijuana-infused beer.
The new beer is alcohol-free, low calorie, low sugar and most of the Province Brands’ beers are gluten-free.
The new patent will pave the way for more cannabis-laced drinks which are alcohol-free. Unlike marijuana, many alcohol drinkers, who consume heavily, will suffer from hangovers the next day.
The new beer is “alcohol-free, yet highly intoxicating, and with a dose-response curve similar to that of alcohol,” the Beverage Daily website quoted the company’s CEO Dooma Wendschuh as saying.
Attempts to perfect and make this much-advanced infusion are expected to be on the increase. It was no surprise when a major alcohol conglomerate – Constellation – purchased almost 10 percent of Canada’s biggest marijuana company for $245 million CDN.
“We started our company in 2016 when it was not known whether alcohol-free beverages which intoxicate using cannabis or its phytocannabinoids would ever be legalized in Canada,” he said.
Canada was the first country in the world to legalize medical marijuana in 2001. Also, it will be the first developed nation to legalize recreational cannabis this summer.
“The government, just a few months ago, made it clear they’d allow [these types of products], and I’d suspect that’s what made Constellation Brands Step up.”
Before announcing the new patent, Province Brands’ founders raised more than $75 million in venture capital from previous projects to help support its development of alcohol-free cannabis beer.
