Citizens Protecting Agricultural Land is a petition against growing marijuana on prime farmland in the western province of British Columbia (BC), CBC News reported on Friday.

The advocacy group on Thursday has brought over 1,400 signatures to the BC Legislature, calling on the province to prohibit marijuana grow operations on the Agricultural Land Reserve.

It is estimated that about 4.6 million-hectare zone is meant to preserve BC’s food production.

“Frankly, there’s a gold rush on right now,” said Marriette. “[But marijuana] should not be grown on existing, fertile agricultural land.”

“We are not against marijuana, it just should not be grown on prime agricultural food land… which has been reserved for food sources, and protection and security for future generations,” said Marriette.

Concerns surfaces when a licensed grower Evergreen Medicinal Supply wanted to transform a local dairy farm into a medical marijuana plant.  Marriette said if this went through, Evergreen Medicinal Supply’s new plant would have altered the landscape with the construction of a series of greenhouses.
