Patent by Italian Company Combining Solar Powered Cannabis and cryptocurrency Farm

Growing marijuana and mining cryptocurrency all in the same time? That’s what Evolution BNK, an Italian medical cannabis grower, is doing.

Evolution BNK is planning to build 20,000 sq m of solar powered greenhouses for its cannabis growing and cryptocurrency mining after patenting an integrated approach for heat transfer, which has the potential to significantly reduce the unit costs of cannabis production.

Cannabis and computers have a symbiotic relationship in terms of temperature. For instance, computers could provide heat for plants in winter.

The rebuilt greenhouses will see the glass roofs replaced fully with solar panels and will include the construction of a basement for the installation of an array of computer servers for its crypto-currency mining business.

The basement will include a ventilation system that will provide year-round temperature control for the cultivation of cannabis.

The first 5,000 sq m facility is to be built by converting existing greenhouse in Sanremo, the “city of flowers” on the coast of Liguria in northwest Italy.

The company expects its first phase to produce about 7,500kg of cannabis a year.

Italy’s new law that came into effect in January no longer requires growers to obtain a license to to cultivate cannabis with a THC content of less than 0.2%.

The expansion is being partly funded with money from Canadian cannabis investor LGC Capital, which has bought a 49% stake in the Italian company.

Mazen Haddad, LGC’s Co-Chairman said in a press release: “There are numerous greenhouses facilities in Sanremo, Italy which could be converted thanks to Evolution’s unique approach and the mild Mediterranean climate, we see Italy as a potential future leader in very low-cost cannabis production.”
