Marijuana-infused beverages that are free of calories are in the making, says Canopy’s CEO.
With Canada’s recreational cannabis legalization on the horizon, Canopy Growth and Constellation Brands are looking to place their stamp on the marijuana market with marijuana-infused beverages.
Marijuana’s sales are already overtaking that of alcohol in Colorado’s Aspen, making marijuana-infused beverages the next best trend in the cannabis ever-so booming market.
Maybe that was the reason why Constellation Brands, the company behind Corona and Modelo, bought 9.9 percent of Canopy Growth stock late last year.
Bruce Linton, Canopy Growth’s founder and CEO, said he is hopeful that they will be able to step into this new market. However, there are no guarantees.
“We expect we’ll be able to make beverages and those beverages will be no calorie, they will cause you to feel upbeat. We’re talking about going into a bar and having a tweed and tonic.”
He added that the beverages would be calorie free with up to 80 mixtures of different cannabinoids; hopefully creating a brand like Red Bull, a new category creator.
“We are, in the second half of 2019, going to be able to introduce a bunch of new products that will allow us to compete better with the illicit market because part of the public policy isn’t just to make it legal, it’s to squeeze out the illegal.”
