Montreal to let People Smoke Pot in Public, Except Where Tobacco is Banned
Montreal says it will allow people to smoke cannabis in public as long as they respect provincial rules.
Mayor Valerie Plante announced today her city won’t add any additional restrictions to cannabis consumption, unlike many other municipalities in Quebec that have decided to ban the substance from all public areas.
Montreal will instead prohibit cannabis consumption anywhere that tobacco use is already banned under provincial law.
The outgoing Liberal provincial government passed strict legislation on cannabis last June, outlawing private sales and residential plant cultivation.
Premier-designate Francois Legault has promised to adopt a more severe law banning public consumption of cannabis throughout Quebec.
Plante says her administration will wait to see what changes to the provincial cannabis law the new government tables and will make the concerns of Montrealers known to the provincial government at that time.
