Researchers at Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University have discovered that cannabidiol (CBD), an element of cannabis that does not get people high, improved the healing process in rats with broken leg bones after eight weeks.
Cannabis can heal bones, says new research from Israel.The research was published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
One of the researchers, Yankel Gabet, said it found that the compound seemed to make bones stronger during healing, which could prevent future fractures. This process occurs as CBD enhances the maturation of collagen, the protein in connective tissue that essentially holds the body together.
“After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future,” Gabet said.
The results of the study add another condition that cannabis seems to be able to treat. It already treats a slew of conditions ranging from cancer to depression.
In the research, Gabet’s team learned that the body’s endocannabinoid system helped to stimulate bone formation and inhibit bone loss. These results could potentially help doctors understand whether marijuana could treat osteoporosis and other bone-related diseases.
“There is still a lot of work to be done to develop appropriate therapies in using marijuana medically, but it is possible to detach a clinical therapy objective from the mood-changing aspects of the stoner’s plant,” says Gabet.
“The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds [are] simply undeniable at this point.”
Cannabis currently is used in treating different forms of arthritis, which can be debilitating for some patients. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that more than one-third of adults who have arthritis find the disorder limiting to their leisure activities and work, thereby reducing their quality of life.
It does this by CBD locking onto CB1 and CB2 receptors in the body, activating the TRPV-1 receptor which plays a role in the mediation of body temperature, pain perception, and inflammation. It also activates adenosine receptors which gives the anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory effects of cannabidiol.
It seems to affect bone healing in the same way, except by working more on collagen.
