Medicinal Cannabis Gets a New Ally as Independent Senator Angus King Now Supports Marijuana for Veterans

With this week’s defeat of the valiant effort to legalize cannabis in Oklahoma, crusaders for cannabis rights might feel disheartened. However, the news is not all negative as medicinal cannabis gained a powerful ally today in Senator Angus King.

Growing National Support

Around the United States, the proliferation of cannabis legalization has been more of a slowly growing tide than a sudden tsunami. This has been reflected by the steady, but profound growth of the percentage of people who support legalizing marijuana.

Currently, for the first time in history, a majority of Republicans support legalizing marijuana. Their support hovers at around 51%. The far more liberal Democrats register a whopping 72% in favor of legal weed. Independents lie somewhere in between with 67% in favor.

For this reason, it is crucial whenever a prominent American politician vocalizes their support for cannabis. Especially if that politician comes from a side of the aisle that doesn’t traditionally support legalization. Enter Senator Angus King.

A God Sent Plant for Veterans

While not entirely on board with full legalization, Senator Angus King is getting behind a community, for whom marijuana is an essential medicine… Veterans.

Currently, a schedule 1 drug, conducting medical research on weed is severely restricted at a federal level.

This is grim news for many who have served courageously in the Armed Forces as 1 in 5 veterans use medical cannabis

More research on marijuana for veterans would help us understand and exploit its benefits for a variety of medical conditions. Current research has testified that conditions that veterans commonly suffer from such as PTSD, anxiety, depression and Traumatic Brain Injury can be treated effectively using cannabis.

How Senator Angus King Plans to Help

Senator Angus King is a member of a bi-partisan group of legislators that advocate for authorizing the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to advance marijuana research.

This would be made possible with a new piece of legislation: the VA Medicinal Cannabis Research Act of 2018. The effort has an additional powerful supporter in the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

One can only hope that this initiative will lead to the destigmatization of marijuana… As well as the greater health and wellbeing of the men and women of the American armed forces.
