Cannabis bill passage is how Trudeau says he kept his promise

The passage of the cannabis bill is how Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he kept his promise.

“It’s been too easy for our kids to get marijuana – and for criminals to reap the profits,” Trudeau tweeted Tuesday evening following the Senate approval of the cannabis bill. “Today, we change that. Our plan to legalize & regulate marijuana just passed the Senate. #PromiseKept.”

Trudeau won the 2015 election after promising to legalize the recreational use of cannabis nationwide.

The Senate voted 52-29 in favour of the federal government’s historic cannabis bill to pass legal recreational sale of marijuana on Tuesday evening.

The Senate approval for the cannabis bill brings to an end a ninety-year prohibition of marijuana in Canada.

This paves the way for Canada to be the first G7 nation and second nation in the world to legalize recreational marijuana, and the second after Uruguay.
